Dermaplaning 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Treatment
Dermaplaning 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Treatment
Dermaplaning is one of those treatments that sounds intimidating but delivers some of the most instantly satisfying results in aesthetics. If you've been curious but hesitant, this guide is for you.
As a certified medical aesthetician in Sarasota with over 10 years of experience, dermaplaning is one of my favorite treatments to perform — because the results are immediate, dramatic, and completely painless. Here's everything you need to know before your first session.
What Is Dermaplaning?
Dermaplaning is a manual exfoliation treatment that uses a sterile surgical scalpel held at a 45-degree angle to gently scrape away the outermost layer of dead skin cells and vellus hair (peach fuzz) from the face. It's performed by a trained aesthetician and takes about 30–45 minutes. The result is instantly smoother, brighter, and more radiant skin — and a complexion that absorbs skincare products and makeup like never before.
Your Most Common Questions — Answered
Will my hair grow back thicker or darker?
No — this is the most common myth about dermaplaning. Vellus hair (peach fuzz) has no pigment or texture to change. It will grow back exactly as it was before. Dermaplaning does not affect hair follicles at all.
Does it hurt?
Not at all. Most clients describe it as a light feathery sensation across the skin. There's no pain, no needles, and no downtime. It's one of the most relaxing treatments we offer at Opulent Haus.
Can I get dermaplaning if I have acne?
If you have active breakouts, we'll wait until your skin is clear before dermaplaning. However, if you have acne scarring or post-breakout marks, dermaplaning is actually excellent for improving texture and tone in those areas.
How long do results last?
Results typically last 3–4 weeks — aligning with your skin's natural renewal cycle. Most clients book monthly maintenance sessions to keep their skin consistently smooth and glowing.
Can I wear makeup right after?
We recommend waiting at least 12 hours before applying makeup. Your skin will be freshly exfoliated and more sensitive than usual — giving it time to settle ensures the best results.
Can it be combined with other treatments?
Absolutely — and this is where dermaplaning really shines. When combined with a chemical peel, HydraFacial, or red light therapy, dermaplaning maximizes product penetration and amplifies results. Our Refine & Renew Haus Facial includes dermaplaning alongside a chemical peel and red light therapy for exceptional results.
"Dermaplaning is one of those treatments where clients can't believe how different their skin feels the moment they look in the mirror. It's instant and it's real."
